A Stupa for Khandro Tsering Chödron

‘In a figure like Khandro Tsering Chödrön, the greatest woman master of our day, you see very clearly what years of the deepest devotion and practice can create out of the human spirit.’ These words, written by Sogyal Rinpoche twenty years ago in The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, resonate to each and every one of us who had the great good fortune to meet Khandro la during her lifetime.

Blessing

Khandro la’s presence at Lerab Ling was an inestimable blessing
for our community and the worldwide Rigpa sangha. It is in loving memory of this truly great spiritual practitioner that Sogyal Rinpoche has initiated the construction of a stupa at Lerab Ling.

Stupa

A stupa, or chorten, is one of the earliest and most sacred forms of Buddhist architecture, originally designed to enshrine the relics
of Buddha Shakyamuni, following his parinirvana. A stupa is also a symbolic representation of the enlightened mind of the Buddha and as such is said to possess great spiritual power and blessing. Throughout the centuries, stupas have been erected to contain the relics of a great many other Buddhist saints and masters.

Where in Lerab Ling

In keeping with this tradition, the stupa will be built on the exact spot where the ceremony for her passing away took place last September. The construction will consist of many phases. Firstly, a secure foundation will be laid upon which the 32-feet* (approx. 10 meter) high monument will stand.

Building Phases

The structure of the stupa will then be built up, following the classical style of ancient India. Once this phase has been completed, it will be filled with relics and other sacred materials (mandalas, mantras and so forth), according to precise specifications detailed in the Buddhist scriptures. The final touch will be the gilding of the spire of the top section. Consecration practices will be carried out at the beginning and end of the project.

All those of you who were touched by Khandro la’s presence and inspired by her example are warmly invited to contribute towards the stupa by making a donation.
